About CINECA

Cineca is a non profit Consortium, made up of 102 Italian national institutions: Universities, Italian Research Institutions and the Italian Ministries of Universities and Education.

Today it is the largest Italian computing centre, one of the most important worldwide. With more seven hundred employees, it operates in the technological transfer sector through high performance scientific computing, the management and development of networks and web based services, and the development of complex information systems for treating large amounts of data.

It develops advanced Information Technology applications and services, acting like a trait-d'union between the academic world, the sphere of pure research and the world of industry and Public Administration. .

Who we are

Kion is a private, for-profit technology company, owned and controlled by Cineca, the main university consortium in Italy made up of 69 Italian universities and 3 Institutions.

Founded in 2001, KION actually supports the modernization agenda of roughly 120 universities across several countries in the European Higher Education Area – Italy (66), Albania (11), Romania (5) and Turkey (41).

Since 2013 Kion is expanding beyond the Higher Education horizon: by developing systems for the K-12 space and the Life Long Learning, Kion's offering is evolving towards a complete, integrated solution to support the student during his whole lifecycle.


In 2009 Kion opened an office in Turkey, with the purpose of supporting the local universities with IT solutions tailored to the specific needs of the turkish market.

Since then approximately 20 universities joined the Kion family.

In 2001 Cineca founded Kion as software house for developing IT systems for Universities.

Kion develops ans supports ESSE3 and GISS, two Student Management Systems for Higher Education, which - along with other integrated modules - are currently installed in more than 83% of all Italian univeristies (more than 66 Universities and about 1.350.000 students).

Our Vision

Our vision is an integrated e-Portfolio. One single portfolio accompaying each student across all different education levels.

Every student may obtain one or more formal degrees, in school or university, at the same time, he might also acquire informal and non-formal competences and skills, wich can be assessed through standardized test. Every competence or certificate that student gains goes inside his ePortfolio, building up his wealth of competencies and skills.

We want to enable this single e-Portfolio. We want every student, every citizen, to be able too go from one learning opportunity to the other bringing his story along, and building it up.
