Leonardo is the pre-exascale Tier-0 EuroHPC supercomputer hosted by CINECA and built in the Bologna Technopole, Italy. It is supplied by EVIDEN ATOS, and it is based on two new specifically-designed compute blades, which are available through two distinct SLURM partitions on the cluster:

  • X2135 GPU blade based on NVIDIA Ampere A100-64 accelerators – LEONARDO Booster partition.
  • X2140 CPU-only blade based on Intel Sapphire Rapids processors – LEONARDO Data Centric General Purpose (DCGP) partition.

The overall system architecture also uses NVIDIA Mellanox InfiniBand High Data Rate (HDR) connectivity, with smart in-network computing acceleration engines that enable extremely low latency and high data throughput to provide the highest AI and HPC application performance and scalability. The Booster partition achieved a Linpack performance of 238.7 Pflop/s.

The present course intends to support the scientific community to efficiently exploit the Leonardo supercomputer system. More precisely, the course aims at providing a full description of the system, with special emphasis on the main crucial aspects for users and application developers such as the access to the cluster, the architecture, and data resources, together with an overview of the software modules and of the programming and production environment. Examples of submission jobs will be discussed, together with the SLURM scheduler commands and the current configuration of the production environment.

Skills:

By the end of the course the participant is expected to be able to:

- Understand the resources allocation procedure and how to get access to Leonardo resources.
- Have an understanding of the Leonardo HPC architecture, disk spaces and the file system.
- Learn how to estimate the consumed budget (accounting).
- Understand the software environment of the cluster.
- Learn how to submit jobs, check its status and understand the current configuration of the production environment.

Target audience:

users and developers that are interested to exploit the Leonardo supercomputer system.

About CINECA

Cineca is a non profit Consortium, made up of 102 Italian national institutions: Universities, Italian Research Institutions and the Italian Ministries of Universities and Education.

Today it is the largest Italian computing centre, one of the most important worldwide. With more seven hundred employees, it operates in the technological transfer sector through high performance scientific computing, the management and development of networks and web based services, and the development of complex information systems for treating large amounts of data.

It develops advanced Information Technology applications and services, acting like a trait-d'union between the academic world, the sphere of pure research and the world of industry and Public Administration. .
